This is a reproduction of a classic sextant from the Victorian era.
Sextants have been used since the 18th century to determine latitude.
Defining the angle of the Sun and Stars with the horizon was the way to
navigate and survey since ancient times, with constant improvements along
the way. The first sextant was produced by John Bird in 1759.
This example includes a fine brass-trimmed cherry wood box with brass
corners to withstand transport at sea. Ideal gift for a history
enthusiast or a collector of nautical accessories. Also available
without the wooden collectors case. Order below.
